SV is the highlight of our week!

Clare & Luke.jpg

My name is Clare and I am part of the SV family along with my 13 year old son, Luke. Luke is a very energetic and enthusiastic keyboard player and he has Down Syndrome. We returned to SV about two years ago having taken a couple of years out and it is the highlight of our week! More recently, I have become a volunteer and I help out in the percussion section whilst Luke is supported by the fantastic SV tutors.

Luke is always the first to throw his hand in the air if a volunteer is needed during the interactive workshops that take place at the beginning of each session and he makes the most of regular opportunities to be creative and express himself through music, movement and dance. The workshops have helped to develop his attention and listening skills and he has learned lots about rhythms and patterns in music, how to play along and work with others and how to use music to tell a story or share thoughts and feelings.

Most of all, Luke loves to perform and the SV concerts are his most favourite thing of all! It is wonderful to see Luke and his fellow students get so much satisfaction from playing both their solo pieces and together as an orchestra. To see the pride and joy on their faces makes all the hard work worthwhile and to see them constantly achieving and wowing their audiences is heart-warming.

My name is Luke. I love the concerts in SV because I watch Kate or Kyran conducting me so that I play the right tune. It’s really good doing a solo because I choose a tune I like and practise it so that I get better at it. I love doing all the activities that Gemma taught me and I love my friends and I love to hear Florence playing her xylophone.

A message from Jen...

My name is Jen and I'm 36 years old and I happen to have Downs Syndrome. I'm the lead flautist in SV and it's a big honour for me. Music and dance are my life and I love to share it with other people. My favourite part of SV is my awesome tutors who support me to be who I am.

And thanks to Noriko for giving me the honour of being the lead flautist of SV and that is the best part ever, thank you Noriko for changing my life.

SV Poem by Ruth

Before Special Virtuosi, I was lost
I was very cold, frustrated, unhappy
I did not know many people, what cost
Unstable, falling over, I am very clumsy.

When I started SV, I saw colours bright,
Beautiful beats, hearing sounds, so wonderful
Flying so high, teachers flying like a kite
Through branches, rescued by an angel.

Loving music, us composing, wow
So this is great fun, fantastic moves
I will stay forever, this is my vow
Pictures or music we need to improve.

I could fall asleep, so beautiful
So magical, so nice, I can taste it.
Warm ups, so peaceful and very playful.
Thank you Juliet, I am committed.

Teachers are so cute and wonderful
Musical beats are like colours, lovely!
We can hug ourselves in a big circle
So very happy and and so free.

All our souls reunited yippee!
So nice, I can picture everything.
Kyran, Hannah, help we shout with glee!
We jump into action with a spring!

The first blog post!

Hi Everyone!

I am Ruth and one of my talents is playing the flute and I play it in the RNCM and I enjoy it.

I joined Special Virtuosi in 2007 when I was 18 years old and I enjoy learning new skills and meeting new friends, both in the Zion and at the RNCM building.

I have learnt on how to get to the building independently and the travel back home, so I am one of the main people who joined since the start of it's fruition.

Throughout the years I have been at Special Virtuosi I have been travelling like to Birmingham, London and many other areas.
